Walked to the Hill to type this
I think NATO is extremely
important to US Foreign Policy and National Interests. NATO perpetuates
alliances and as a nation that stands from European countries, it ensures that
if there is ever an attack on our soil, they will fight the fight as if it is their
own. Though we have a very strong military, if not the strongest in the world,
we are surrounded by countries that do not have the greatest military capacity.
Even though Canada is a member of NATO, we could not solely rely on their
military to suffice if there is an attack on our soil. With that being said, if
there is an attack on Canadian soil, chances are there could be an attack on
U.S. soil. Though the U.S. and Canada are natural allies because we are
neighboring countries, the location to another country does not ensure an
alliance and having Canada as a contractual ally makes an attack on Canada much
less likely since they are neighbors to one of the most powerful countries in
the world.
Having
vowed alliances is so important to national security. The more allies a country
has, the less of a chance there is an attack on that countries soil, especially
when the strongest military in the world is a part of that pact. Many countries
don’t dare to attack NATO members because the U.S. is a member. Likewise,
counties do not have the gall to attack the U.S. because they are a part of
NATO, which means the strongest and most influential countries in the world
would attack the perpetrator back. Even if there is not a physical attack on
land, NATO encourages countries to negotiate with each other if there is a
dispute, rather than physically attacking the other country.
Having
alliances, even if it is not part of a trade pact, is influential towards an
economy of a country as well. Alliances are more likely to trade and deal with
each other than countries who are not alliances. Of course, countries still
trade with members outside of NATO, but it makes trading and dealing easier
when countries are alliances.
